Adaptec Inc. and Hyundai Electronics America yesterday scrapped Adaptec's proposed $775 million purchase of Hyundai's Symbios Inc. unit, which makes devices that connect computers to networks, in the face of opposition by the United States Federal Trade Commission. Adaptec said it expected to take a $20 million charge related to the transaction in its first quarter, which will end on Tuesday. Adaptec announced another unrelated first-quarter charge in March. Adaptec said the F.T.C. would probably oppose the purchase because the combination might have given Adaptec a monopoly in one of several technologies to move information to and from computers.
