LEAD: The trustee for the bankrupt Delaware & Hudson Railway Company has been given less than two more weeks to find a buyer for the freight carrier or face the liquidation of the nation's oldest continually operated railroad. United States Bankruptcy Judge Helen Balick granted a request on Tuesday from the trustee, Francis Dicello, for an extension to continue operating the road while a buyer is sought.

LEAD: The Ford Motor Company said it would shut its assembly plant in Lorain, Ohio, next week, idling about 2,700 hourly workers. The closing results from slow sales of the Thunderbird and Cougar models assembled at the plant, which was also closed for four of the first six weeks of 1990. A market analyst at Ford said that sales of full-sized specialty cars like Thunderbird and Cougar ''have been considerably weaker this year than the car market in general.
