AVAYA TO PAY UP TO $10 MILLION FOR HARDWARE PROBLEMS

Avaya Inc., a maker of office telephone equipment, agreed to pay as much as $110 million in cash or credits to clients who sued over problems related to the year 2000. Customers who bought certain Avaya products from 1990 to 1999 are eligible to receive part of the settlement, the company said. The credits are valid for three years and could be used for discounts of up to 45 percent on Avaya products or services. The suit centered on concerns that certain equipment might not be able to process date functions correctly when their internal clocks switched to Jan. 1, 2000, Avaya said. Avaya, based in Basking Ridge, N.J., denied any wrongdoing. Lucent Technologies, which spun off Avaya in 2000, is responsible for a portion of the costs in excess of $50 million, Avaya said.
