IF it bleeds, it leads. For those unfamiliar with this old TV maxim, it means that a juicy bit of violence -- accompanied, naturally, by gut-wrenching footage -- is a sure-fire candidate to top the late-evening news show. That being the guiding spirit at many television stations, it is little wonder that slashers and car crashers have long been the meat and potatoes of local news. And in New York, murder and mayhem have tended to translate into forced marches across the tube by black ne'er-do-wells, accused or convicted.

FORMER CHIEF OF DELPHI ON-LINE SERVICE BUYS IT BACK

Three years after the News Corporation bought the Delphi on-line service, the former chief executive of Delphi has bought it back for an undisclosed price. The executive, Dan Bruns, who left Delphi two years ago, led a team of entrepreneurs who jumped at the chance to buy it back earlier this year, around the same time as the News Corporation's Internet joint venture with MCI Communications fell apart. Mr. Bruns announced his return to Delphi subscribers, whose numbers have been dwindling, on line this week.

The Precision Castparts Corporation of Portland, Ore.. said yesterday that it would acquire the closely held Olofsson Corporation for about $52 million. Olofsson, based in Lansing, Mich., has annual revenue of about $40 million and makes precision turning and boring machines, mainly for the automotive industry. Precision Castparts said Olofsson would complement the machines business of its specialty products division, which also performs high-precision boring as well as castings for the aerospace, automotive and medical industries.

Pepsico Inc. said yesterday that it would raise its dividend by 15 percent and that it would split its stock 2 for 1. Pepsico, the soft-drink and fast-food company, will distribute two shares for every share held as of May 10. The company will then raise its quarterly dividend to 11.5 cents a share from 10 cents, when accounting for the split. The higher dividend will be paid on June 28 to shareholders of record on June 7.

Paine Webber Group Inc. has been ordered to pay a rival, Prudential Securities Inc., a unit of the Prudential Insurance Company of America, a record $2.5 million for raiding a Prudential brokerage branch office in Gainesville, Fla. A New York Stock Exchange arbitration panel imposed the fine last week because Paine Webber had hired almost all of Prudential's Gainesville brokers and sales assistants in 1993, The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday. The arbitrators told Paine Webber to pay Prudential $1 million in compensatory damages and $1.5 million in punitive damages. It was the largest punitive award in a raiding case since at least 1991, the earliest date for which the exchange keeps records.

COMPANY NEWS;MRS. SMITH'S TO BE SOLD TO FLOWERS, NOT CONAGRA

The J. M. Smucker Company said yesterday that it had agreed to sell its Mrs. Smith's frozen pie business to Flowers Industries instead of to Conagra Inc. Financial terms were not disclosed. Smucker said the sale would result in a charge of 4 cents a share against its 1996 results. Smucker had tentatively agreed in February to sell Mrs. Smith's, which it acquired from the Kellogg Company in 1994, to Conagra. The sale of Mrs. Smith's, which generates $110 million in annual sales, is expected to close at the end of May, Smucker said. Flowers, which is based in Thomasville, Ga., makes food products for retail and food-service customers.

COMPANY NEWS;GENERAL MOTORS TO BUILD MISSOURI PLANT

The General Motors Corporation said yesterday that it planned to build a stamping plant in Wentzville, Mo., that will be connected to its full-size van assembly plant there. The new plant is to include two new press systems for stamping parts for the new van, and represents a $100 million investment to the Wentzville community, G.M. said. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall. The 200,000-square-foot plant is expected to begin providing parts to the assembly plant in the 1997 model year. G.M. said that the new factory would cut transportation costs, reduce inventory and improve communication between the assembly and stamping operations.
