Saving the Artistry of a Visionary

FOLK environments are fragile things. At the Anderson Johnson Faith Mission in Newport News, Va., part of the building is salvageable, and part is not. In 1923, when Mr. Johnson was 8, he had a vision from God, who told him to go out and preach, said Deborah McLeod, curator of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, a nonprofit community arts center in Newport News. In the two-story building where Mr. Johnson lived from the 1970's until last year, he painted the walls with angels and people (left), inspired by his visions. On Sundays, he held services in the mission, in the Ivy Avenue area of the city's southeast section. In 1993, the city government decided to build three recreation centers, including one where the mission stands, and paid Mr. Johnson $50,000 for the house and an adjacent one that he also owned. In September, Mr. Johnson moved out -- and Ms. McLeod organized an effort to save the murals.

CABLETRON SAYS IT WILL NOT TRY TO BUY CHIPCOM

Cabletron Systems Inc. said that it would not try to buy the Chipcom Corporation, a rival maker of computer networking equipment. Cabletron, which is based Rochester, N.H., had bought almost $15 million worth of shares of Chipcom and said earlier this week that it was considering a hostile bid for the company, which is scheduled to merge with the 3Com Corporation in a friendly takeover valued at $775 million. Cabletron also said it would sell its holdings in Chipcom, which is based in Southborough, Mass. Cabletron said it would instead try to lure customers of Chipcom and 3Com while the merger is pending.

CIGNA SHARES CLIMB ON GOOD EARNINGS REPORT

The Cigna Corporation's stock rose 10 percent yesterday after the company said that its second-quarter earnings had risen 58 percent on improved results in its property and casualty business. Shares of the insurer, based in Philadelphia, rose $8.25, to close at $89.25. Cigna announced its quarterly results after the market closed on Tuesday, and trading yesterday morning was delayed about 45 minutes by an order imbalance. Cigna said profit excluding investment sales rose to $189 million, or $2.60 a share, from $120 million, or $1.65, a year earlier. The results exceeded Wall Street's expectations of $2.09 a share.

PACIFIC DUNLOP SELLS MOST OF PACIFIC BRANDS

Pacific Dunlop Ltd. of Australia said early today that it had sold the bulk of its Pacific Brands food group for the equivalent of $785 million to three buyers, including the J. R. Simplot Company of Idaho and Nestle S.A. of Switzerland. Pacific Dunlop sold its major dairy operations and a 45 percent stake in a Thailand ice-cream venture to Nestle's Australian unit for $422 million. J. R. Simplot, a privately held company, has acquired the Edgell-Birds Eye frozen foods business and bakery operation Herbert Adams Bakeries for an undisclosed price. And Pacific Dunlop said its Socomin Fine Foods had been sold to Manassen Foods Australia for an undisclosed price. Pacific Dunlop, based in Melbourne, is a consumer and industrial products and food conglomerate.

NATIONAL AUTO CREDIT TO SELL AGENCY RENT-A-CAR

National Auto Credit Inc. said yesterday that it had reached an agreement to sell its rental replacement business, Agency Rent-A-Car, to Avis Inc. The terms of the agreement include the sale of unspecified assets and a short-term lease for the rental vehicles, which will be used by National Auto's member dealers. Shares of National Auto, a Solon, Ohio-based finance company, slipped 12.5 cents, to $14.375, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Sybase Trading Halts After Imposter's Call

Executives at Sybase Inc. and officials at Nasdaq said today that someone impersonating Sybase's chief financial officer called Nasdaq and asked for a trading halt. The stock of the software company, based in Emeryville, was halted at 1:01 P.M., Eastern daylight time, and resumed trading 34 minutes later. The halt touched off speculation that the company was about to be acquired by a bigger computer company.

NBC to Acquire 3 TV Stations From Outlet Communications

NBC said yesterday that it had reached an agreement to acquire Outlet Communications Inc. for $47.25 a share, or about $311 million. At the same time, NBC, a unit of the General Electric Company, said it had settled its dispute with the Renaissance Communications Corporation, which had tried to block the network's bid for Outlet. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

International Briefs; Coca-Cola in Romania

The Coca-Cola Company has opened two new bottling plants in Romania, part of the company's $150 million investment in the country. A $35 million bottling plant, owned by Australia's Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd., began production yesterday in Ploesti. A second $23 million plant, owned by the Leventis Group of Greece, opened Tuesday in Timisoara. Coca-Cola now has eight bottling plants in the country.
