In Philadelphia not long ago, a teen-ager was bludgeoned to death by a gang wielding a baseball bat. What was striking about the local news coverage was how little space was devoted to the horrible act and how much to a kind of interpretive free-for-all: the casting of blame on the 911 system, leading to the Mayor's firing of several dispatchers, all of them black; black leaders' outrage at this "scapegoating"; the Mayor's outrage that race had been injected into the whole thing. In fact, the arc of this story was not unusual. A typical front page of a 1990's newspaper consists of articles about people's assorted resentments, disappointments, predictions, anger, optimism or pessimism concerning one thing or another, as well as one or two accounts of murders, invasions and other events.

SANOFI IN TALKS TO SELL VETERINARIAN OPERATIONS

Sanofi S.A., which is divesting itself of noncore businesses, is in talks with several companies to sell its veterinarian operations, a company spokesman said. The daily French business newspaper Les Echos reported that Sanofi, a unit of Elf Aquitaine, was close to selling its operations in North and South America and in Asia to a Rhone-Poulenc S.A. subsidiary, Rhone-Merieux. "It's not a done deal," said William Bratton, a Sanofi spokesman. "We are in negotiations with other companies." Rhone-Poulenc is one of those companies, he said. He declined to name the others.

BRITISH TELECOM SALE OF AT&T STOCK TO PROCEED

The AT&T Corporation and British Telecommunications P.L.C. said yesterday that they would proceed with the sale of 35.9 million AT&T shares held by BT USA Holdings Inc., a unit of British Telecom. Based on yesterday's closing price of $49, up $1.25 a share, the sale would raise almost $1.76 billion. The stock represents 2.3 percent of AT&T's 1.568 billion shares outstanding. The companies said the sale could be completed later this month, depending on market conditions. British Telecom acquired the shares of AT&T as a result of AT&T's merger with McCaw Cellular Communications Inc. last September.

STORAGE TECHNOLOGY SHARES UP 6% ON RUMORED BID

Shares of the Storage Technology Corporation climbed 6 percent yesterday as there was speculation that the International Business Machines Corporation might be interested in buying Storage Technology, based in Louisville, Colo., a maker of information-storage systems, and that fourth-quarter earnings will top forecasts. A Storage Technology spokesman said he was unaware of any acquisition talks with I.B.M. I.B.M. declined comment. Storage Technology's shares rose $2 a share on the Big Board yesterday, to $31.50, on volume of almost 2.8 million shares.

U.P.S. to Buy More Planes

United Parcel Service said today that it would add 29 planes in the next two years as the company, a package-delivery giant, expects to sustain its recent surge in business. The closely held Atlanta-based company said it would add 13 Boeing freighters to its fleet this year and 16 aircraft in 1996. Next year's addition is six more than previously planned.

Home Shopping Stock Falls

Shares of Home Shopping Network Inc. fell 13.5 percent today after the company said it expected to report disappointing fourth-quarter results. Paine Webber Inc. and Bear, Stearns & Company lowered the company's rating today from "attractive" to "neutral." Home Shopping's stock closed down $1.25, at $8, on the New York Stock Exchange, after touching a 52-week low of $7.25.

U.S. Judge May Reconsider Settlement With Microsoft

The judge overseeing the Microsoft Corporation's long antitrust wrangle with the Justice Department agreed here today to consider taking more testimony opposing the Government's settlement agreement with the software giant. In an unusual move, United States District Judge Stanley Sporkin issued an order indicating that he would hear arguments from competitors who still hope to force changes in the antitrust settlement Microsoft reached last July.

Orange County Officials May Defer Payments

Orange County, Calif., may defer debt payments through 1996 as it tries to recover from bankruptcy, county officials said today. The county's Board of Supervisors is considering directing the county's financial advisers to begin negotiations with holders of its general fund obligations to defer payments for the remainder of this year and all of the 1996 fiscal year.
