But increasingly, those doing the grabbing are taking entire stacks because they disagree with the editorial content. Yet even with witnesses and confiscated papers as evidence, publishers have been unable to convince the police and prosecutors that it is a crime to take something that is already free.

Departures at Wasserstein

Morgan Stanley Group Inc. said yesterday that it had hired three investment bankers from Wasserstein, Perella & Company, including its co-president, Gary Parr. Mr. Parr, 37, will lead Morgan's insurance investment banking group as a managing director and will be a member of the strategy committee of the banking division. Mark Ellman, 36, and Stephen Fromm, 29, are joining Morgan with Mr. Parr.

APPLIED EXTRUSION ACQUIRES HERCULES DIVISION

Applied Extrusion Technologies Inc. has completed the acquisition of the Packaging Film Group of Hercules Inc. for $161 million in cash. The Packaging Film Group produces film used for consumer product packaging. Applied Extrusion, based in Middletown, Del., makes thermoplastic nets that are used for a variety of purposes. Hercules, based in Wilmington, Del., makes chemicals and related products, as well as solid fuel systems.

ASHLAND ACQUIRES SPECIALTY CHEMICAL COMPANY

The Ashland Chemical Company said yesterday that it had acquired ACT Inc., a small Allentown, Pa., producer of high-purity chemicals for the manufacture of semiconductors. Terms were not disclosed. Ashland, which is owned by Ashland Oil Inc., said the acquisition would expand its electronic chemicals business. Ashland acquired ACT's patented technology for photoresist stripper chemicals and the company's research and manufacturing operations in Allentown. Ashland Chemical, of Dublin, Ohio, had revenue of $2.5 billion last year.

MOLECULAR DYNAMICS STOCK REACHES A LOW

The stock of Molecular Dynamics Inc. fell 38 percent and hit its lowest level ever yesterday after the company said late Wednesday that it expected to report a "substantial" first-quarter loss. The company's stock was down $3.875, to $6.125, in Nasdaq trading. Molecular Dynamics, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., also reported a 20 percent drop in revenue from the corresponding quarter a year earlier. The company said it expected its poor first-quarter results to carry over to the second quarter. The maker of instruments for life-science research attributed the weak forecast to economic weakness in Europe and the Pacific Rim and spending cuts in the United States pharmaceutical market linked to proposed health care changes.

EXPANSION PLANNED FOR DELL'S IRISH PLANT

The Dell Computer Corporation said yesterday that it would expand its manufacturing plant in Limerick, Ireland, because of a surge in sales in Europe. Dell, the fifth-largest maker of personal computers in the world, said the move could add 400 jobs in the next few years. The plant now employs about 380 people. Established in 1990, the Limerick site is Dell's only full-production plant outside the United States and supplies the company's desktop, portable and advanced computers across Europe. The expansion will add 140,000 square feet of manufacturing space, Dell said.

Lehman Reducing Its Merchant Banking

Lehman Brothers is cutting back its merchant banking business and has no plans to put more money into a fund that finances acquisitions by the firm, a senior official at the firm said yesterday. Separately, Lehman Government Securities Inc. is suing four Askin Capital Management funds to recover more than $6.5 million it says it is owed in connection with Askin's purchases of mortgage bonds.

FIRST EASTERN SHAREHOLDERS APPROVE PURCHASE BY PNC

The First Eastern Corporation said yesterday that its shareholders had approved its acquisition by the PNC Bank Corporation of Pittsburgh for about $330 million in cash. The acquisition of First Eastern, which is based in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and has 51 offices and $2.1 billion in assets, will give PNC Bank the leading market share in northeastern Pennsylvania, the companies said. Under the agreement, PNC Bank will pay $27 for each share of First Eastern, which closed yesterday unchanged at $26. The merger is expected to close in June. PNC Bank is the nation's 10th-largest banking company, with $62.1 billion in assets at the end of 1993.

PICKENS BOUGHT 255,000 MESA SHARES IN MARCH

The chairman of Mesa Inc., T. Boone Pickens, purchased 225,000 common shares of the natural gas producer in late March for more than $1.3 million, raising his stake to 7 percent. The purchases were made from March 28 to March 30 on the open market for prices ranging from $5.875 to $6.125, according to a filing yesterday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Mr. Pickens's latest purchases come amid a yearlong buying spree in which he has bought one million shares of the Dallas company for almost $6.4 million. On March 8, Mesa said it planned to sell 20 million common shares and might consider a new debt offering. The new share offering would raise by almost 50 percent the number of Mesa's shares outstanding.

WESTERN PUBLISHING TO SELL ITS GAMES UNIT TO HASBRO

Western Publishing Group Inc., removing itself as a possible takeover target, said it would sell its games and puzzles business to Hasbro Inc. for $105 million and concentrate on its core publishing operations. As part of its plan, Western Publishing, the nation's largest children's publisher, said it would lay off an unspecified number of employees. In a statement, Western Publishing acknowledged that it had held "extensive discussions" with third parties interested in acquiring it, but had ended the talks after the sale to Hasbro was "determined to be the best means for maximizing shareholder value." Western Publishing's stock rose 37.5 cents, to $14.25, in Nasdaq trading. The news came after the market closed.
