Study Says Misunderstanding Exists Between Clergy and the News Media

A new study has concluded that a "chasm of misunderstanding" exists between news organizations and religious leaders in the United States, resulting in reporting that is often inadequate. But the study said that those shortcomings were due more to ignorance and lack of resources than, as frequently maintained, to anti-religious bias among journalists.

Union at the Post Sets Strike Deadline

Officers of the Newspaper Guild, the union that represents news, advertising and circulation employees in contract negotiations with the New York Post, said yesterday that they had set a strike deadline for tonight. "Nobody wants it," said Harry Leykis, the guild chairman at the Post. "But we've considered the alternative, and it's not good."

QVC Network Inc. said today that the Federal Trade Commission had asked the company, a retailer on cable television, for additional information on its proposed merger with a rival, Home Shopping Network Inc. The stock ofSupercuts Inc., an operator of haircut shops, fell 15.5 percent yesterday after its investment rating was cut by a Goldman, Sachs analyst. The stock fell $2.75, to $15, in Nasdaq trading. Steven Kent, the analyst at Goldman, Sachs, reduced his rating on the shares to "market performer" from "moderate outperformer," according to a research official at the investment firm.

The Ann Taylor Stores Corporation, which reported disappointing same-store sales in August, said yesterday that its second-half and year-end results will be weaker than expected. BLEAK OUTLOOK SENDS STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS DOWN 27.6%

Shares of the Structural Dynamics Research Corporation plunged 27.6 percent yesterday in heavy Nasdaq trading after the company said poor sales of a new software series would send third-quarter earnings and revenue significantly below expectations. The gloomy outlook reversed upbeat comments the company made in July after reporting lower second-quarter earnings. Structural Dynamics, which develops computer-aided mechanical design software for engineers, said it expected to earn 5 cents to 15 cents a share in the quarter. That is below the consensus estimate of 18 cents, the company said.
