VOLVO IS SET FOR RETURN TO SOUTH AFRICA

The Swedish vehicle company Volvo A.B. said yesterday that it would resume the sale of its cars in South Africa through a franchise agreement with a local distributor. Combined Motor Holdings Ltd. will market the Volvo 960 and 850 models in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. Volvo pulled out of South Africa in the mid-1970's, when it was selling between 3,000 and 4,000 cars a year in the market.

F.T.C. WON'T CHALLENGE MEDCO PURCHASE

Merck & Company said yesterday that the Federal Trade Commission had notified the company that it was terminating its investigation of the proposed $6 billion acquisition of Medco Containment Services Inc. Merck, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, agreed on July 28 to acquire Medco, the country's largest pharmacy-by-mail operator and drug benefit-plan manager, for $39 a share in cash. Merck said the commission decided it would not challenge the transaction. Medco's stockholders will vote at a special meeting on Nov. 18 on the merger. Medco's stock jumped $1.25 a share yesterday, to $38.25, in Nasdaq trading, where it was the most active issue of the day. Merck's shares closed down 12.5 cents, to $32, on the New York Stock Exchange.

BERKSHIRE HATHAWAY CLOSES PURCHASE OF DEXTER SHOE

Berkshire Hathaway Inc. completed the acquisition yesterday of the Dexter Shoe Company by issuing 25,203 common shares in exchange for all of the privately held company's stock. Berkshire, a Omaha holding company run by the investor Warren E. Buffett, said its shares outstanding would increase 2.2 percent, to 1,117,750, as a result. Based on Berkshire's closing stock price of $17,400 a share yesterday on the New York Stock Exchange, the transaction is currently worth $438.5 million. Dexter, of Dexter, Me., makes athletic and casual shoes for men and women. Berkshire Hathaway also owns the H. H. Brown Shoe Company, the maker of Nursemates shoes for nurses and a variety of other types of footwear.

A NEW LINE OF PERSONAL COMPUTERS FROM DIGITAL

The Digital Equipment Corporation introduced a line of personal computers yesterday called the DECpc XL series. The new machines are compatible with the Intel Corporation's Pentium microprocessor as well as Digital's own new Alpha AXP chip. The new line consists of four models priced from $2,899 to $4,599. Digital, of Maynard, Mass., entered the personal computer market only last year. Previously, Digital had resold PC's made by other vendors.

A San Antonio broker has been ordered to pay a woman more than $1 million for failing to pay her for securities that he sold from her account. According to an arbitration decision, a National Association of Securities Dealers arbitration panel ordered Jerome Hansmann in September to reimburse Maria de Jesus Navar, 79, of El Paso for $350,000 of losses and also imposed $700,000 in punitive damages.

Thomas Hansberger, the president of Templeton Worldwide Inc., resigned unexpectedly on Friday, about a year after the mutual fund company was acquired by Franklin Resources Inc. William J. Lippman, a senior vice president with Franklin, will act as interim president. Cablevision In New Deal

The Cablevision Systems Corporation and E. M. Warburg, Pincus & Company have agreed to buy three cable-television systems in Massachusetts for $90 million from Neshoba Communications, Cablevision said Friday. The purchase, which is subject to regulatory approval, would add 34,500 subscribers in the Boston area to Cablevision's base of 2.3 million subscribers in 19 states. The company, which is based in Woodbury and is the nation's fourth-largest cable operator, produces American Movie Classics, Bravo and Sportschannel.
