By Bloomberg News
Bloomberg News
Faced with continued weakness in the market for new passenger jets, the McDonnell Douglas Corporation said yesterday that it would cut output of two models, the MD-80 and MD-11, next year and delay developing a third, the MD-95. McDonnell has borne the brunt of a price war that has caused huge losses at major airlines. The airlines responded by cutting spending on planes. In 1992, McDonnell expects to deliver 90 of its smaller MD-80 jets and 43 of its MD-11 wide bodies. By Bloomberg News
Bloomberg News
Elliot Prince, an Oppenheimer & Company analyst, dropped a "buy" recommendation on Borland International Inc. on concerns about a price war in data bases with the Microsoft Corporation. Mr. Prince, who now rates Borland "market performer," cut his earnings estimates for Borland, to $1.10 a share from $1.50 a share for the year ending March 1993, and to $1.90 from $2.50 for the 1994 fiscal year. On Monday, Microsoft released Access for Windows, its first data base program, and said it would charge about $200 less a copy for Access than what competitors have charged. Borland, which has dominated the data base market with Paradox and dBase, signaled it was willing to meet Microsoft's prices. "Even if Borland wins" the data base battle, it is "winning at lower price points," the analyst said.
