Unity '94, scheduled to begin on July 27 in Atlanta, was supposed to recognize the coming of age of minority journalists. Plutonium-Test Series Wins Polk Award

A reporter for The Albuquerque Tribune has won the George Polk Award for national reporting for a series of articles about secret plutonium experiments conducted on American citizens by the Government. The awards were announced yesterday by Long Island University, which administers the awards for excellence in journalism.

Disney in Land Deal

The Walt Disney Company said today that it would purchase 70 acres in a planned beach community on the California coast. Disney Vacation Development has already bought 35 acres in the Irvine Company's Newport Coast community overlooking the Pacific Ocean between Newport Beach and Laguna Beach. Its agreement calls for purchasing 35 more acres. Terms were not disclosed. Disney plans to build 650 vacation villas that conform to the development's Mediterranean village theme.

GOLDEN WEST WITHDRAWS OFFER FOR CALIFORNIA FEDERAL

The Golden West Financial Corporation said yesterday that it had ended its bid for California Federal Bank after the institution insisted that it intended to remain independent. Golden West, a savings and loan holding company based in Oakland, Calif., offered to buy California Federal, formerly known as CalFed, in December. The offer, which did not set a dollar value, was to equal California Federal's tangible book value at closing. California Federal, based in Los Angeles, is the nation's fifth-largest savings institution. Its stock was unchanged at $10.25 yesterday on the New York Stock Exchange. Shares of Golden West fell 12.5 cents, to $39.25.

ANCHOR TO ACQUIRE SAVINGS BANK IN $80 MILLION DEAL

Anchor Bancorp Inc. of Hewlett, L.I., said yesterday that its wholly owned banking subsidiary had agreed to acquire Lincoln Savings Bank for $80 million in cash. The deal would give the combined institution $10 billion in assets and $7 billion in deposits in 65 branches in New York, New Jersey and Florida, making it one one of the 10 largest publicly held savings and loans in the nation. Lincoln Savings Bank, which has 14 branches in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Nassau County, has total assets of $2.1 billion.

LOWE'S SETS 2-FOR-1 STOCK SPLIT AND CASH DIVIDEND

The Lowe's Companies said yesterday that its board had announced a 2-for-1 stock split and declared a dividend of 4 cents a share on the post-split shares. The cash payout equals the 8 cents a share paid on the shares before the split, Lowe's said. The company, based in North Wilkesboro, N.C., sells home-improvement products. The split is effective on March 31 for holders of record March 16, the company said. Its stock rose 37.5 cents yesterday, to $65.75, on the New York Stock Exchange.

Scimed's Shares Jump 3.5% After Defeat in Patent Case

Shares of Scimed Life Systems Inc. jumped 3.5 percent in heavy trading today after analysts said the company's legal defeat in a patent case Friday would cost less than expected. Scimed's shares gained $1.25 to close at $37.50, after reaching a high of $39.25 in Nasdaq trading.

Drilling-Rig Count Falls

The number of active United States oil and natural gas drilling rigs continued its two-month slide last week, according to Baker Hughes Inc. The oil service company's count of active rigs, an indicator of oil and natural gas exploration, declined 4, to 743, in the week that ended Friday. Despite the decline, the total was 19.8 percent above the corresponding week a year earlier, when 620 rigs were drilling. The higher year-over-year total reflects increased natural gas exploration.

New Center for NatWest

National Westminster Bancorp plans to open a $31 million service center in Scranton, Pa., that could employ up to 1,500 people by 1995. At the same time, the bank holding company will eliminate 275 positions in its consumer and indirect lending operations. These jobs will be transferred to the Dallas-based Electronic Data Systems Corporation, a unit of the General Motors Corporation, as part of a computer services agreement. The service center in Scranton will consolidate 1,300 back-office jobs from several NatWest operations in the New York area.
