CABLEVISION TO SPIN OFF SATELLITE AND CINEMA UNITS

The Cablevision Systems Corporation, the largest cable television operator in the New York area, approved the spinoff of its Rainbow D.B.S. satellite service and Clearview Cinemas theater chain. The company, which is based in Bethpage, N.Y., will contribute as much as $450 million to the new entity and invest an additional $114 million this year in Rainbow D.B.S. Cablevision's chairman, Charles Dolan, will be chairman of the new business, the company said. Cablevision's shareholders will receive stock in the new company, with details of the distribution to be disclosed later, Cablevision said. Cablevision stock rose $2.43, or 13 percent, to $21.79 a share yesterday.
